Autumn in Karuizawa. A young man staying at the mountain resort becomes quietly captivated by a mother and daughter he meets there, secretly christening the daughter "Rubens' Fake Painting" for a beauty that seems lifted from the Flemish master's canvases. Apart from them he elaborates her image in reverie; in their presence every fabrication dissolves. Woven through with a painter friend at work on abstract landscapes, Hori Tatsuo's debut story traces the tremors of youthful longing with a delicate lyricism that would flower in his later Sacred Family.
