Drifting adventurer Anthony Cade takes on what looks like an easy errand: deliver a packet of memoirs and old love letters to London on behalf of an old friend. The memoirs turn out to concern the throne of a small Balkan kingdom, and within hours Cade is entangled in blackmail, espionage, and murder. The action moves to Chimneys, a great English country house where a missing royal jewel, a gentleman traveling under a false name, and the elusive international thief King Victor all converge. An early Christie that blends light-hearted adventure with a satisfyingly twisty mystery.
