About
Aboard a Pacific liner carrying Japan's athletes to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, the rower Sakamoto is struck at first sight by Akiko, a high jumper on the same team. Teased by teammates and hemmed in by a ban on contact between male and female athletes, he cannot bring himself to speak his heart as the voyage draws on. Drawn from Tanaka Hidemitsu's own experience as an Olympic oarsman, this Ikeya Shinzaburo Prize–winning novella captures the ache of unspoken love and the fleeting radiance of youth with the clarity of a private confession.
