About

Haiku master Takahama Kyoshi looks back on his long friendship with the novelist Natsume Soseki in this quiet, intimate memoir. Introduced through the poet Masaoka Shiki, the two men grew close through the literary magazine Hototogisu, which Kyoshi edited and where Soseki first found fame as a novelist. Drawing on personal letters, Kyoshi recounts the birth of Soseki's celebrated debut I Am a Cat and other pivotal moments of the Meiji literary world. Beneath its restrained prose lies the deep, complicated affection of one great writer remembering another.
