A theatrical essay by the folklorist and poet Shinobu Orikuchi, recording his experience of watching a performance of the classic bunraku and kabuki play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami. With his characteristic sensitivity, Orikuchi attends to gesture, chant, and the individual style of each performer, then reaches beyond the stage into the ritual and folk origins that underlie Japan's classical performing arts. More than a review, it is a meditation on how ancient religious memory continues to move within traditional theatre.
