About
Against the twilight of the Heike clan, the young warrior Saito Tokiyori, a retainer of Taira no Shigemori, falls in love with the court dancer Yokobue. Forbidden by his father to marry beneath his station, he renounces the world, enters the Ojoin temple in Saga as the monk Takiguchi Nyudo, and turns Yokobue away when she comes to find him. He moves on to Mount Koya to deepen his ascetic practice, while Yokobue, unable to forget him, takes the veil at Hokkeji in Nara and dies of sorrow. Takayama Chogyu's debut and only novel is a lyrical historical romance that helped shape early modern Japanese literature.
