About
This autobiographical short story recalls the boyhood of a child given up for adoption soon after birth and raised in a temple in Kanazawa. Against the vivid natural backdrop of his northern hometown, the narrator revisits his longing for a distant birth mother, the warmth of his adoptive mother and gentle elder sister, and his bitter conflicts with a temple teacher. Muro Saisei, celebrated first as a poet, here recovers a lost childhood through prose of great tenderness and precision. Luminous, wounded, and deeply lyrical, it marks his emergence as a major writer of fiction.
